Education
Our laboratory director, Dr. Galal Abdo, received his PhD in Reproductive Biology at Zurich University in Switzerland in 1995, after which he did postgraduate work in Zurich, and a stint as a research scientist in Japan as part of an NIH-sponsored grant.
Experienced Embryologist
Prior to joining VCRM in 2003, Dr Abdo was a senior embryologist at IVF Michigan, a large program in the Detroit area where he personally performed over a thousand ICSI cases, including over a hundred cases involving testicular sperm extraction. He has personally performed more than 1300 semen analysis and 900 sperm preparation for IUI. He then set up a program in Fort Myers, FL, achieving high success rates using his skills in extended embryo culture systems.
Over the last 5 yrs, he has been working extensively on extended media for blastocyst transfers (BT) with a 68% ongoing pregnancy rate with the use of BT. Dr Abdo's expertise in the Laboratory has enabled VCRM to have the highest pregnancy rates in the entire Metro DC area for the past 4 years. He also performs over 1000 semen analysis per year (many for referring physicians in the area), and all the IUI and IVF/ICSI cases, along with testicular sperm identification, culture, and freezing. Dr Abdo has also been involved with our egg freezing program where vitrification is VCRM's method of freezing oocytes for later use.
Embryology & IVF Research
He has also published extensively in the scientific literature on embryology and IVF related matters. His current research focuses on extended media for embryo growth and vitrification techniques to preserve embryos and eggs. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants.
