Family Building for Lesbians

Our Virginia fertility center offers several options for family building for lesbians

VCRM is proud that same sex couples feel comfortable with our reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Fady Sharara, and seek us out for family building for lesbians. Our Virginia fertility center can accommodate female couples who are starting or adding to their families with procedures such as IUI, IVF and reciprocal IVF.

Most women who come to us for family building for lesbians choose IUI with donor sperm

When a couple comes to us for treatment, if one of the women is a good candidate for pregnancy and has no fertility issues, the couple usually chooses IUI, or intrauterine insemination. During IUI, the couple chooses a sperm donor, either someone known to them or an anonymous donor from a sperm bank. The screened and prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus so it can access the fallopian tubes to fertilize the mother’s egg.

IVF is another option for women who have fertility issues

Family building for lesbians who have fertility issues may involve IVF, or in vitro fertilization. The couple uses donor sperm, and the egg, either provided by one of the women or by a donor, is fertilized in our state-of-the-art IVF laboratory. The resulting embryo is transferred to the partner who is carrying the baby; remaining embryos are cryopreserved.

Our Virginia fertility center has stellar success rates with frozen embryo transfers.

Couples may choose reciprocal IVF, which allows both partners to participate in the pregnancy

Another technique that is gaining in popularity for family building for lesbians is reciprocal IVF. Couples like this advanced fertility treatment option because both partners play an active role in building their family.

We begin by retrieving eggs from one partner. She will need to take fertility medication for ovarian stimulation. Our embryologist will select the most viable eggs to be fertilized by donor sperm in the IVF lab. The resulting embryo is transferred to the other partner’s uterus, and she will carry and deliver the baby. This will need involvement by a reproductive lawyer and is significantly more expensive than traditional IUI using donor sperm.

VCRM is a warm, welcoming environment for couples who need LGBT family building services
